I was thrilled when I was chosen to be the Vancouver Champion for Earth Day on April 22, 2021. When I was asked what I loved most about Vancouver when producing events, I said the list is too long to publish but I would list my Top 10 reasons why I think Vancouver is should win the prize for the most sustainable city in Canada.
10 Reasons Why Vancouver is the Greenest City in Canada
1. Sustainable Transportation
Welcome to Vancouver, Canada’s greenest city with amazing sustainable transportation such as the Canada Line, Skytrain and the Seabus. You can get almost everywhere by transportation so you don’t need a car!
2. Vancouver Accommodations
Vancouver has over 50 Green Key certified hotels that save water and electricity on a daily basis. It’s so wonderful to have so many green venue choices when planning your events. Big bonus!
3. Vancouver Convention Centre
Vancouver Convention Centre, one of my favorite venues, has 6 acres of living roof, along with a seawater heating and cooling system. The VCC is made out of reclaimed wood and has one of the most gorgeous views from the ballroom foyer.
4. Sweet as Honey
Fairmont Waterfront, Vancouver Convention Centre and other hotels have active bee-hives on their properties where they harvest honey and use in their kitchens. They even offer tours to see the bees. So cool!
5. Unique Venues
The Vancouver Aquarium embraces an ocean conservation program that empowers consumers and businesses to choose sustainable seafood options. When choosing a menu for our clients, we always select Oceanwise options as a responsible choice.
6. Outdoor Venues
Vancouver has great green space around the city for delegates, visitors and locals to explore on foot, bike or scooter. Yoga at Jack Poole Plaza anyone? The weather and views in Vancouver are world class!
7. Farm to Table
Vancouver has sustainable fishing and ‘Farm to Table’ programs which focus on ingredients within 100 km. Fresh tasty food at your events is a plus!
8. Back to Nature
We have a Grizzly Bear habitat on Grouse Mountain, a research centre at Vancouver Aquarium and a Cliffwalk at Capilano Suspension Bridge. All three of these are fantastic excursions for your group
9. Urban Rainforest
Life on the West Coast is all about being green and embracing health and wellness opportunities. I love the Juice and Smoothie Trucks that are parked around the city. Healthy, quick options for grabbing something on the go.
10. Award Winning Sustainable Decor
Want living green walls? Walking tree statues? We have it all here in Vancouver where the greenery is inside and outside. Lots of live or silk options for your next cocktail reception, gala or fundraising dinner. After all we are Canada’s Urban Rainforest. Come play in the rain with us!
