Celebrate the arrival of Spring – with a spectacular display of colorful blooms! We love this bright and cheerful time of year when the flowers are in season. For your next event you can design your own spring floral arrangements. Try pastel tulips fresh from the garden. Perhaps a tasteful basket of yellow daffodils. What about a bucket of paper-whites? Or call us for some expert advice.
Here are six of our favorite flowers when designing our event florals during the spring season.
1. Tulips
With innate cheerfulness and beauty, the tulip is one of the best flowers to include in your spring designs. There’s a tulip for every arrangement, from diminutive 4-inch tall specimens to extravagant multi-foot-high blooms. The tulip is a perennial, bulbous plant with showy flowers in the genus Tulipa, of which around 75 wild species are currently accepted and which belongs to the family Liliaceae. Tulips will never disappoint, as event guests always comment on the cheerful bunches of tulips on tables. And they come in a multitude of vibrant colors!
2. Harmony Iris
As much a late-winter plant as an early-spring bloomer, dwarf wild iris pops with deep, wild purple or blue. The large iris is a summer pleasure, but this small beauty is an early spring treasure. Cut a clutch of the iris to put in a vase and take the pleasing fragrance of this early spring flower inside at your next event. Or try to combine the iris with other flowers, as it is such a welcome contrast to many of spring’s pastel flowers. We include this flower in many of our arrangements as it adds such a nice splash of blue which is so eye catching and vibrant as event decor.
3. Daffodils
If it’s Spring, it’s time for a splash of daffodils! These are the glory of the mid-spring blossoms. The bright, jovial spring flower has a range of shapes and sizes, from trumpet to small- and large-cupped. Large, late varieties like King Alfred and Mount Hood are brilliant even on rainy days. Daffodils, the flowers symbolizing friendship, are some of the most popular flowers exclusively due to their unmatched beauty.Add a few daffodils to your arrangement or simply let them shine in a vase by themselves. These are Spring’s happy flowers and perfect to bring out a smile!
4. Hyacinths
The plant is named after a character in Greek mythology, Hyakinthos, a handsome young man who was loved by the sun god Apollo. One day when they were throwing the discus, the jealous god of the West Wind blew the discus back toward Hyakinthos and fatally wounded him. A beautiful flower sprang up where his blood fell on the ground, and Apollo named it after him. There are often one hundred flowers on the flower spike and they have been cultivated in a wide range of colors. Hyacinths are intensely fragrant and a must for your spring arrangements. Incredible smell!
5. Alliums
The Purple Sensation allium bridges the gap between spring and early summer-flowering perennials. The narrow grass-shaped foliage is a clean rich green and rises up from the base of this hardy perennial with an interesting and whimsical twist. Onions, shallots and garlic are members of the allium family that belong in the vegetable garden. But there are many ornamental alliums that deserve a hearty welcome in your next spring bouquet or table arrangement. Add some radiant fuschia orchids, coupled with white or blue hydrangeas and you have a spectacular arrangement!
6. Freesia
This flower is a genus of about 14 species mostly native to South Africa. They are very fragrant and their delicious aroma can radiate for a long distance. I have had freesia placed at the registration table, and we could smell the fragrance in the ballroom. Blossoms have different shades ranging from white to pink, but the most common cultivar, is Freesia Refracta. Its vivid yellow blossoms and inviting strong scent attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Even though we’re familiar with freesias from the florist’s shop, growing them in the garden or putting them in a vase isn’t hard to do.
